F.M. Dostoevsky on the Reasons for "Remarkable Dislike" Europe to Russia.Aleksey A. Lagunov & Andrey Yu Smirnov - 2021 - RUDN Journal of Philosophy 25 (1):25-33.
The relevance of the article is due to the authors attempt to apply some of the philosophical concepts of F.M. Dostoevsky to the comprehension of contemporary sociocultural reality. The purpose of this study is to clarify the reasons for the historically unfriendly attitude of Europe towards Russia by analyzing the works of F.M. Dostoevsky dedicated to this problem. In the process of writing the article, the published Diaries of the writer were used; diary entries unpublished during the writer's life; philosophical (...)

    On Problems of the Evolution of Logic.V. A. Bocharov, E. K. Voishvillo, A. G. Dragalin & V. A. Smirnov - 1980 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 18 (4):31-52.
Logic today is a ramified discipline existing on many levels. It is actively pursued by philosophers, mathemeticians, and computer specialists. The reason is that it is widely employed to solve a number of problems both in the theory of knowledge and in mathematics and computer science. But the broad spectrum of application of contemporary logic does not change the fact that its basic content has the nature of philosophical methodology. In contemporary logic it is the forms of thought and the (...)

  16. Kantian Philosophy and ‘Linguistic Kantianism’.Mikhail A. Smirnov - 2018 - Kantian Journal 37 (2):32-45.
The expression “linguistic Kantianism” is widely used to refer to ideas about thought and cognition being determined by language — a conception characteristic of 20th century analytic philosophy. In this article, I conduct a comparative analysis of Kant’s philosophy and views falling under the umbrella expression “linguistic Kantianism.” First, I show that “linguistic Kantianism” usually presupposes a relativistic conception that is alien to Kant’s philosophy. Second, I analyse Kant’s treatment of linguistic determinism and the place of his ideas in the (...)

Embedding the elementary ontology of stanisław leśniewski into the monadic second-order calculus of predicates.V. A. Smirnov - 1983 - Studia Logica 42 (2-3):197 - 207.
LetEO be the elementary ontology of Leniewski formalized as in Iwanu [1], and letLS be the monadic second-order calculus of predicates. In this paper we give an example of a recursive function , defined on the formulas of the language ofEO with values in the set of formulas of the language of LS, such that EO A iff LS (A) for each formulaA.

    Propagation Properties of Bound Electromagnetic Field: Classical and Quantum Viewpoints.A. L. Kholmetskii, O. V. Missevitch, T. Yarman & R. Smirnov-Rueda - 2020 - Foundations of Physics 50 (11):1686-1722.
The present work is motivated by recent experiments aimed to measure the propagation velocity of bound electromagnetic field that reveal no retardation in the absence of EM radiation. We show how these findings can be incorporated into the mathematical structure of special relativity theory that allows us to reconsider some selected problems of classical and quantum electrodynamics. In particular, we come to the conclusion that the total four-momentum for a classical system “particles plus fields” ought to be a present state (...)

Understanding justice in an islamic context: Some points of contrast with western theories.A. Smirnov - 1996 - Philosophy East and West 46 (3):337-350.
It is the difference in the ways of seeing "obvious things" that creates cultural diversity. With this in mind, the fundamental ideas behind the notion of justice in classical Islamic thought are examined, such as the nature of truth and the relation of "things" to time and space, and the meaning of the "law" that follows from these ideas. Certain features of Islamic justice (e.g., latitude in making judicial and legislative decisions) are treated as natural and even logical consequences of (...)

Strict embedding of the elementary ontology into the monadic second-order calculus of predicates admitting the empty individual domain.Vladimir A. Smirnov - 1987 - Studia Logica 46 (1):1 - 15.
There is given the proof of strict embedding of Leniewski's elementary ontology into monadic second-order calculus of predicates providing a formalization of the class of all formulas valid in all domains (including the empty one). The elementary ontology with the axiom S (S S) is strictly embeddable into monadic second-order calculus of predicates which provides a formalization of the classes of all formulas valid in all non-empty domains.

    Conceptual Schemes and Relativism.Lolita B. Makeeva & Mikhail A. Smirnov - 2020 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 57 (1):59-78.
The idea of conceptual schemes is one of the most influential and widely used notions in contemporary philosophy. Within the analytic tradition the idea occupies a fundamental position in positivist views as well as in replacing them post-positivist conceptions. Outside the analytic tradition a similar idea is of key importance in structuralist and post-structuralist theories. Despite the broad applicability of the notion of a conceptual scheme, its precise sense is far from being evident in the context of various philosophical trends. (...)

Ancestral war and the evolutionary origins of heroism.Oleg Smirnov, Holly Arrow, Douglas Kennett & John Orbell - manuscript
Primatological and archaeological evidence along with anthropological accounts of hunter-gatherer societies indicate that lethal between-group violence may have been sufficiently frequent during our ancestral past to have shaped our evolved behavioral repertoire. Two simulations explore the possibility that heroism (risking one's life fighting for the group) evolved as a specialized form of altruism in response to war. We show that war selects strongly for heroism but only weakly for a domain-general altruistic propensity that promotes both heroism and other privately costly, (...)

    Internal and External Logic.V. A. Smirnov - 1988 - Bulletin of the Section of Logic 17 (3/4):170-181.
In an essential way I make use of Frege’s and Vasilev’s ideas. N. A. Vasilev distinguished two levels in a logic. The abstract logic depends on gnoeologic assumptions while the empirical part of logic depends on ontological ones. Vasilev did not change the external logic but he did change the internal one. His system can be viewed as a non-standard syllogistics based on classical propositional logic . Vasilev’s ideas become plain if we discern cleary acts of predication and acts of (...)

Ontology of Substances and Ontology of Facts: back to Comparison.Mikhail A. Smirnov & Смирнов Михаил Алексеевич - 2023 - RUDN Journal of Philosophy 27 (2):345-360.
The purpose of this work is to characterize clearly the early Wittgenstein’s position in context of the contemporary discussions between the adherers of classical ontology, based on the notion of substance, and its detractors. The Aristotle’s ousiology is usually regarded as a locus classicus of substantial ontology. A noticeable tendency in the contemporary philosophy is the rejective stance towards the notion of substance and towards the vision of the reality as the ‘totality of things’ ( summa rerum ). This trend (...)

Time, of course, will provide the opportunity for a deeper and fuller contemplation of the historical significance of the June 1983 Plenum of the Central Committee of the CPSU. But even now it is clear that it went far beyond the mere examination of current questions of the ideological and general political work of the party, above all because the speech of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, Comrade Iu. V. Andropov set forth the most important (...)
